Genetically Modified Organisms GMOs

GMOs Applications

 Current Use of GMOs

Many industries have been benefiting from the research on GMOs. Many transgenic plants are being produced which are increasing the yield of the crops. Moreover, the cost of production of food and drugs have been reduced due to these changes in genome of the plants. The use of pesticides in crop production have also greatly reduced after the usage of these transgenic plants. The transgenic plants are more resistant to diseases as compared to normal plants and the crops produced by these plants are more enriched in nutrients.

As with the improvement in the biotechnology, we are now able to produce transgenic plants which are more resistant to heat, stress, salt and water drought. Thus, these plants can grow and survive in harsh conditions where they otherwise could not. Similarly, cattle's have also been now engineered so that they could survive mad cow diseases.

How GMOs benefit medicine industry?

Pharmaceuticals is another industry for the use of the GMOs. A protein called human growth hormone was the first protein that was made in plants. In 1989, the first antibody was produced in plants. Transgenic animals are widespread bred to carry genes of human, thus we can study the genetical factors of various diseases. Read more
